Pre-zygotic isolation mechanism or barriers to formation of zygote.

  • Seasonal isolation: occurs where two species mate or flower at different time of the year, e.g., California Pinus radiata flowers in February while P. attenuate flowers in April (2);
  • Behavioral isolation: Occurs where animals exhibit courtship patterns, mating only result if courtship display by one sex results in acceptance by the other sex (2);
  • Ecological isolation: occurs where two species inhabit similar regions but have different habitat preference, e.g., Viola arvensis grow on calcareous soil whereas V. tricolor prefers acidic soil(2);
  • Mechanical isolation: occurs in animals which have differences in the genitalia that prevent successful copulation and in plant where related species of plant are pollinated by different animals. (2);
