Life cycle of a fern
- The gametophyte (prothallus) bears special gamete-forming organs; antheridia which produce sperms (antheroziods) and archegonia which produce eggs (oosphere). From these structures, the gametes are formed by mitosis.
- Sperm (antheroziods) are released from the antheridia and brought into contact with the eggs(oosphere) by swimming) towards the archegonium. The antherozoid and oosphere fuse to form a diploid zygote which grows into a sporophyte.
- The sporophyte is a self-supporting plant bearing specialized structures in which they are scattered over as wide an area as possible.
The spores then germinate into a gametophyte. This is a flat plate of photosynthetic cells anchored by simple hair-like rhizoids to the soil. The gametophytes then repeat the cycle
