Orographic rainfall

Orographic rainfall

  • Orographic rainfall is precipitation produced when the mountains or uplands such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Keny act as barriers to airflow, forcing the air to rise. The moist air moving upslope cools down by producing clouds and precipitation.
  • The wind ward side of the mountain with ascending moist air receives much more rainfall while leeward side (rain shadow area) of the mountain with descending dry air receives little or no rainfall.
