Describe variation of molar conductivity with concentration of electrolyte
Variation of molar conductivity with concentration
Molar conductivity for both strong and weak electrolyte decrease as the concentration increase as shown by the graphs below
Explanation
For strong electrolyte, molar conductivity decrease as the concentration increase because, at high concentration ions tend to form spheres of opposite ions causing a drag force during movement of ions lowering molar conductivity. On dilution the tendency to form these interactions reduce lowering the drag force thus molar conductivity increases.
For weak electrolyte, molar conductivity decreases as the concentration increases because percentage ionization decreases as concentration increases providing a few conducting ions per mole of electrolyte. On dilution molar conductivity increases due to increase in percentage ionization increase increasing conducting ions per mole of electrolyte.
