Suggested answers
(a) Calculate the total number of students that will be admitted:
(i) by Jambo State University for year 2020/2021. (show working) (04marks)
Let the total number of students admitted be X
15% of X = 360
X = 2,400
Therefore, 2,400 students were admitted
(ii) under each selection and admission criteria other than regional balance. (12marks)
Number of sports men and women admitted = 4% of 2400 = 48
Number of students admitted of the slot of Foundation Body = 48/4 =12
Number of students of staff biological children admitted = 48/2 = 24
Number of Special Needs students admitted = 12 x 6 = 72
Number of students on affirmative action admitted = 24
Number of students admitted for the slot of academic excellence
= 2,400 – (360 + 48 + 12 + 24 + 72 + 24)
= 2,400 – 540
= 1860
(b) In your opinion, how fair is the University’s admission criteria? (15marks)
It is fair because
- Facilitating admission of staff’s children motivates staff to teach knowing that their own are part of the students they teach.
- Regional balance facilitates a balanced growth in the country knowing that education is the stimulant of growth and development of the country. Failing to cater for regional balance, the university would end up admitting only students from urban areas that have access to good schools.
- Affirmative action increases the access of girls to higher education since girls are disadvantages in many ways in the normal education systems. For instance, many parents have low morale of paying fees for girls. Secondary girls are told to much domestic work compared to boys that limits their performance in schools. Thirdly, giving girls higher education boosts economic development of the country since these will provide additional labor force.
- Students with Special Education Needs require a special consideration because these they disadvantaged in so ways in the normal education system such lack of instructors, and teaching and learning facilities
- Similarly, Games and sports require a special consideration because games and sports is a full proffetional business yet many of these students spend a lot of their time on the field practicing. This limits their time class attendance and revision leading to poor academic performance.
