Alcohols are dehydrated by hot concentrated sulphuric or phosphoric acid to form alkenes. The mechanisms depend on the class of alcohols.

• Primary alcohol undergo elimination bimolecular; E2.

• Tertiary alcohols undergo elimination unimolecular; E1.

• Secondary alcohol undergo either E2 or E1 mechanism
