Pleiotropy occurs when a single mutation or gene/allele affects more than one phenotypic characteristic.

Or

A phenomenon whereby a single genetic variant influences ≥2 apparently unrelated phenotypic traits via independent biological pathways, for instance, because of the effects in different tissues or because the effect of the variant on one trait is causally related to variation in another trait.
