Explain why it is difficult to eliminate recessive alleles from a population

Reasons why it is difficult to eliminate recessive alleles from the population

(i) A large proportion of the recessive alleles in a population exist in the carrier heterozygotes from which they are           not eliminated by  environmental selection and possible elimination.

(ii) due to heterozygous advantage i.e. certain recessive alleles confer extra advantage to organism containing then in heterozygous state. The maintains the allele in the population. For example, the sickle cell allele.
