What are Post-zygotic isolation mechanism (barrier affecting hybrid)?
Post-zygotic isolation mechanism (barrier affecting hybrid)
- Hybrid inviability: Hybrid are produced but fail to develop to maturity. E.g., hybrid formed between northern and southern race of leopard frog (Rana pipens) in North America. (2);
- Hybrid sterility: Hybrids fail to reproduce functional gametes, for example the mule (2n = 63) results from the cross between the horse (Equus equus 2n= 60) and Equus hrnionus 2n =66)
- Hybrid breakdown: F1 hybrid are fertile but the F2 generation and bach crosses between F1 hybrid and the parent stock fail to develop or are infertile. E.g. hybrid formed between species of cotton (genus gossypium)
