Beryllium evolves H₂ when reacted with sodium hydroxide solution to form a complex and hydrogen.

Be (s) + 2OH^– (aq) + 2H₂O (l)  → [Be(OH)₄]^2-(aq) + H₂ (g)

magnesium, calcium, barium  do no react with sodium hydroxide.
