Ancient Civilizations:
- Nok Culture: One of the earliest known civilizations in West Africa, the Nok people were skilled in iron smelting and produced intricate terracotta sculptures.
- Ghana Empire: Flourished between the 6th and 13th centuries, known for its wealth in gold and extensive trade networks.
Medieval Empires:
- Mali Empire: Known for its wealth, especially under the rule of Mansa Musa, one of the richest individuals in history. Timbuktu, a major city in the Mali Empire, became a center of learning and trade.
- Songhai Empire: Succeeded the Mali Empire and became one of the largest empires in African history, known for its military prowess and control over trade routes.
Coastal Kingdoms:
- Benin Empire: Located in present-day Nigeria, the Benin Empire was known for its sophisticated art, especially its bronze sculptures.
- Ife: An ancient Yoruba city known for its artistic achievements and as a center of culture and religion.

Contributions of Sierra Leone as a “nursery bed” for modern civilization of West Africa
Sierra Leone and Liberia were chosen as settlement colonies for freed slaves. These from America were settles in Liberia and those from Britain were settled in Sierra Leone. Intermarriages produces a race called “Creoles” and their language was “Krio”.
