B₁ and B₂ are carbon brushes, C₁ and C₂ are split ring commutators and abcd is a rectangular coil

When the coil rotates at uniform velocity in magnetic field, e.m.f is induced in it. When the coil is in vertical position, the commutators change brushes C₁ to B₂ and C₂ to B₁.

E.m.f reverses direction but the current does not change direction. Hence current flows in the same direction in a resistor.
