Physiological adaptations of diving animals include increased blood volume and elevated hematocrit (percentage of volume of blood which red blood cells), hemoglobin, and myoglobin, whereas oxygen-use rates are minimized via regulation of metabolism, heart rate, and peripheral vasoconstriction.
