Why humus has high buffering capacity

Why humus has high buffering capacity

  1.  humus contains complex organic molecules that can bind both acidic and basic ions, helping to buffer pH changes
  2. Humus has a high cation exchange capacity (CEC) which means it can hold onto and exchange positively charged ions (cations) like calcium, magnesium and potassium.
  3. the decomposition of organic matter in humus by soil microbe releases various compound that can further buffer soil pH.
