Discuss the measures taken by East African countries to check on Neo-colonialism since independence
Neo-colonialism is the practice of using economic, political, and cultural pressures to influence or control other countries, often former colonies. This is done indirectly, without direct political or military control. Neo-colonialism often involves exploiting the natural resources and labor of the affected countries to benefit the more powerful countries or multinational corporations.
East African countries have taken various measures to combat neocolonialism since gaining independence in the following ways:
- Economic Integration: Countries in East Africa have formed regional economic communities such as the East African Community (EAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to promote economic cooperation and reduce dependence on former colonial powers.
- Industrialization: Efforts have been made to industrialize and diversify economies. For example, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have invested in manufacturing and processing industries to reduce reliance on exporting raw materials.
- Nationalization: Some countries have nationalized foreign-owned enterprises to gain control over their economies. For instance, Uganda nationalized foreign-owned companies in the 1960s and 1970s.
- Educational Reforms: Educational systems have been reformed to promote national consciousness and self-reliance. Tanzania’s “Education for Self-Reliance” policy, introduced by Julius Nyerere, is a notable example.
- Formation of the African Union (AU): The AU, formerly the Organization of African Unity (OAU), was established to promote unity and cooperation among African countries and to provide a collective bargaining power against neocolonial influences.
- Non-Aligned Movement: East African countries have participated in the Non-Aligned Movement, which aims to maintain independence from major world powers and avoid being drawn into their conflicts.
- Cultural Rejuvenation: Efforts have been made to revive and promote African cultures and traditions, reducing the influence of foreign cultures.
- Infrastructure Development: Investment in infrastructure, such as roads, schools, and hospitals, has been prioritized to improve self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on foreign aid.
- Creation of awareness through literature and drama: For instance, academician like Prof. Ali Mazrui has written many books and conducted many lectures against neo-colonialism.
- Diversification of economy: to increase on the national income from exports
- Economic empowerment: For example in Uganda through various wealthy creation schemes such Emyooga, Entandikwa.
- Traditional medicine: Promotion of traditional medicine for example, in Uganda has reduced over reliance on western medicine.
- Diversification of tax collection: to increase government revenue has reduced dependence on Foreign Aid.
These measures have helped East African countries to assert their independence and reduce the influence of neocolonialism. However, the struggle continues as new forms of economic and political pressures emerge.
