Challenges/problems faced by the diary farmers in Uganda

  • Shortage of land in densely populated aresa such as Kabale, Mbale, Kampala, etc. led to limited expansion of dairy farms for example Beatrice dairy farm in Kabaleand Jessa dairy farm in Mityana.
  • Poor quality dairy cattle lead to production of low amounts of milk.
  • Poor transport network in Kaabong, Kotido and other areas discourage dairy farm production and post harvest losses.
  • Inadequate surface water in some parts of the country like Kayunga, Kotido lead to low milk yield.
  • Pest and diseases such as ticks, Foot and mouth diseases limit milk production in dairy cows in Mbarara, Kiruhura and so on.
  • There is inadequate veterinary services due to limited extension staff to advise farmers on better farming techniques.
  • Limited milk collecting and preservation centres lead to high post-harvest losses of milk and dairy products.
  • Inadequate capital and credit schemes limit dairy farming expansio.
  • Hash climate especially in dry seasons limit availability of pastures for dairy nimals
  • Political instability in some part of the country.
  • Limited market for dairy products.
