Explain how a cathode ray oscilloscope can be used to measure a.c voltage. 

An unknown a.c. voltage, whose peak value is required, is connected to the Y-plates. With the time-base switched off, the vertical line on the screen is centered and its length then measured as shown in figure (i) below. This is proportional to twice the amplitude or peak voltage, V₀. By measuring the length corresponding to a known a.c. voltage V, then V₀ can be found by proportion.
