Explain how line spectrum accounts for existence of discrete energy levels in an atom.
Explain how line spectrum accounts for existence of discrete energy levels in an atom.
Atoms of a particular element emit radiation with definite frequencies or wavelengths. When an atom is in excited state, and an electron may fall into a vacant position in lower energy level is accompanied by emission of electromagnetic radiation with the characteristic E= hf;
Where E is the difference in the energy of involved energy level and h is Plank’s constant. Since the frequencies are definite for a particular element, it implies that the energy levels are discrete.
