Explain the precautions taken in determinations of Young’s modulus of a wire. 

• After each reading, the load is removed to check that the wire returns to its original length, to ensure that elastic limit is not exceeded.
• Long wires are used to achieve measurable expansion
• Extension is measured using a Vernier Caliper since it is always small
• the diameter of the wire is measured using micrometer screw  gauge.
• Thin wires are used to produce high tensile stress
• Identical wires are used to eliminate errors due to (i) the yielding of the support when loads are added to the test wire, (ii) changes of temperature.
