Explain what is observed when the gold leaf electroscope is given a negative charge and the zinc plate is illuminated by ultraviolet light. 

Divergence decreases because the zinc plate loses electrons by photoelectric effect since ultraviolet radiation has frequency higher than threshold frequence of zinc.
