Factors that influence the development of fishing industry in Uganda

Physical factors

• Availability of several grounds rich in fish e,g, L. victoria, L. Kyoga etc.
• The indented nture of the shoreline on lakes Victoria and kyoga have provided excellent fish breeding zones as wellas land sites like Kasenyi, Kasensero.
• Presnce of a variery of commercial fish variety such as Nile perch, Tilapia etc.
• Presnece of ubandant plankton led to multiplication of fish in Lakes Victoria, Kyaga etc.
• Theshallow lakes such as Kyoga, Victoria provide a rich continental shelf where fishing activities can take place.
• Presence of forests such as Bugala and Kalangal forests along L. Victoria provide timber required for boat constructionand wood for smoking
• Salt deosits along the shores of L.Kyoga and L.Katwe are used for preservation of the fish caught
• The numerous islands on Lake Victoria such as Ssese, Bugala provide excellent sitesfor the fishing industry.
• The ralatively low temperatures on Lake Victoria, George favors fish preservation.

• A big local and international market for Tilapia and Nile perch
• Modern fishing gers such as trawlers, motorized boats are used
• Fish processing facilities in factories lakie Masese along L.Victoria reduce post harvesting losses.
• Refrigerated trucks are now available for safe transport from the fishing sites to processing factories and market.
• Liberalization and privitization encreased the capital injected frm private investors and foreign investors.
• Imroved transport network links the fishing graounds and processing industries or market.
• Presence of skilled man power from training institutions such as Makerere University.

Relative political stability encourages investment in fishing industry.
