Reaction hydrofluoric acid with silicon dioxide

Moist hydrogen fluoride and aqueous solutions of the acid attack silica and glass, so the solution is stored in polythene containers.

SiO₂ (s) + 4HF (aq)   → SiF₄ (aq) + 2H₂O (l)

SiF₄ (aq)  + 2HF (aq) → H₂SiF₆ (aq) (fluorosilicic acid)
