Reaction of bromine and iodine with sodium hydroxide

Bromine and iodine react with sodium hydroxide solution to give the halide and halate (V):

• 6OH^– (aq) + 3Br₂ (g)       → 5Br^– (aq) + BrO₃^– (aq) + 3H₂O (l)
• 6OH^– (aq) + 3I₂ (g) →   5I^– (aq)  + IO₃^– (aq) + 3H₂O (l)
