Reaction of group II elements with nitric acid
(a) Beryllium does not react with concentrated nitric acid because it forms a layer of insoluble BeO.
(b) The rest react to form nitrates and hydrogen gas
Mg(s) + 2HNO3(aq) → Mg(NO3)2(aq) + H2(g)
