Role of Itriqlal in the liberation of Morocco

The Istiqlal Party (Independence Party) played a crucial role in Morocco’s struggle for independence from French colonial rule:

Formation: The Istiqlal Party was founded on December 18, 1943, by nationalist leaders including Allal El Fassi and Ahmed Balafrej.

Leadership: The Istiqlal party was led by prominent figures such as Allal El Fassi, who became a symbol of the nationalist movement.

Proclamation: On January 11, 1944, the Istiqlal Party issued the Proclamation of Independence, demanding an end to colonialism and the reinstatement of Morocco’s independence.

Public Support: The proclamation was signed by 66 Moroccans, including key nationalist leaders, and marked a significant moment in the independence movement.

Alliance with Sultan Muhammad V: The Istiqlal Party allied with Sultan Muhammad V, who became a central figure in the struggle for independence.

Tangier Speech: Sultan Muhammad V’s Tangier Speech in 1947, rejecting French tutelage, further galvanized the nationalist movement and strengthened the alliance with the Istiqlal Party.

Political Mobilization: The Istiqlal Party organized mass protests, strikes, and other forms of resistance against French rule. The party also, extended its network into rural areas, gaining support from various segments of Moroccan society.

Post-WWII Decolonization: The global wave of decolonization after World War II provided an opportunity for the Istiqlal Party to push for independence.

Allied Support: The support of Allied forces, including the United States, for Morocco’s independence further bolstered the nationalist movement.

Negotiations: The Istiqlal Party engaged in negotiations with the French government, leading to the gradual transfer of power.

Independence: Morocco gained independence on March 2, 1956, with Sultan Muhammad V becoming the first King of independent Morocco.

The Istiqlal Party’s leadership, strategic alliances, and mobilization efforts were instrumental in achieving Morocco’s independence.
