State and explain the effect of temperature on surface tension of a liquid.
Increase in temperature lowers surface tension because increase in temperature increases kinetic energy of molecules and increases movement of molecules reduces the cohesive forces between them.
Practical exaples
- Water: As the temperature of water increases, its surface tension decreases, making it easier to form bubbles or spread across surfaces.
- Cleaning Solutions: Many cleaning solutions are more effective at higher temperatures because the reduced surface tension allows them to spread and penetrate surfaces more efficiently.
