State and explain the factors that affect electronegativity.
Factors that effect electronegativity.
i) atomic radius,
The bigger the size of an atom, the lower the attraction of the nucleus to the outer electrons leading to a reduction in electronegativity.
(ii) nuclear charge,
The higher the the nuclear charge, the stronger the outer electrons attracted to the nucleus which leads to an increase in electronegativity
(iii) the screening effect of the inner electrons.
Screening effect is the repulsion of the outer electrons by the inner electrons of an atom. thus, increase in screening effect lowers electronegativity.
