State characteristics/properties of ionic compounds

  1. They consist of ions and not molecules.
  2. They are electrolytes, i.e., when dissolved in water or when fused, conduct an electric current followed by decomposition into constituent elements.
  3. They are solids of high melting points. The melting point increases with the strength of ionic character for instance, the melting point of NaCl > NaBr > NaI decrease in that order; because the strength of the ionic bond decreases in the same order due to decreasing electronegativity of the anions.
  4. They are insoluble in organic solvents but many of them are soluble in water.
