Steps being taken to expand the cotton sector in Uganda 

  • The government of uganda formed the Cotton Development Organization (CDO) to promote the production of cotton through the distribution of high quality seeds, monitoring and regulating the processing and marketing of cotton in the districts of Gulu, Amoro, Pader, Kitgum etc.
  • Training and sensiting of farmers on cotton production by orgnisations such DENIVA (Development network of indegenous voluntary Associations), PMA (plan for modernization of Agricultur), NAADS
  • Construction and rehabilitation of road network to facilitate cotton marketing.
  • The government has attracted foreign investors to invest in cotton sector for exmple Lira spinning mill (the biggest in East Africa) was sold to the chinese Investor (JITCO)
  • Use of modern technology such as mechanization , use of fertilizers and pesticides
  • The cotton development organization(CDO) has begun constructing and hiring cotton storage facilities in Kasese, Lira, soroti to reduce post harvest losses.
  • Improvement of political stability and security in the country.
