Steps being taken to sustainably utilize the fisheries resources in Uganda

These include

  • The ministry of agriculture is carrying out restacking of L. Victoria, Kyoga etc. to increase the quantity of fish.
  • There is law enforcing against evila fishing practices such as fish poisoning
  • Water hyacinth control is being carried out to promote easy access of fishing sites
  • There is seawage tretment at Bugolobi to minimize water pollution which is harmful to fish.
  • Education of fishermen against poor fishing habits, use of protective gear etc.
  • Construction and rehabilitation of roads to ensure quick access to the fishing grounds of L. Victoria, L. Kyoga etc.
  • Regular patrons to guard against poor fishing methods
  • Provision of loans to the fishing industry
  • Research and development into alterative sources of fish such as fish ponds.
  • Provision skilled man power in the fishing industries from institution of learning such as Makerere University.
  • Privatization and construction fish processing plants to provide market for fish
  • Use fish and fish products in Livestock provide alternative use and hence expand fish market
  • Improvement in technology such as use of motor boats, and modern fishing methods such as trawlers.
