Beauty contest is an assemblage of girls or women at which judges select the most beautiful called beauty pageant.
Challenges of beauty contest of beauty contest
- Unrealistic beauty standards
- May lead to eating disorder in order to conform to set weight limits
- Emphasis on beauty rather than talents
- Loss of self-esteem by the losers and those who can’t meet certain standards that define beauty.
- Organizing such a competition may be very expensive for both organizers and competitors.
- Many people have negative attitudes on the beauty contest
- Personal bias due to personal feelings and lack of standard measure
Positive importance/Advantages of beauty contest
- Promote socialization among people, building bridges between cultures and societies with their mutual love of pageantry.
- Encourage development of skills such as public speaking, leadership, creativity and others that can be used in other industries, Thus, the girls that take part in these contests turn out to be responsible young women who engage in activities that build the country.
- Source of income to participants and organizers
- Market places and countries from where they are organized
- Promote self-confidence and a spirit of competition among contestants.
- Promote tourist industry by building the country’s image.
- Support charitable work, because most of the beauty queens later get involved in charitable organization
- Contests may get exposure and better opportunities.
- Teaches Discipline: Practicing, staying in shape, and doing all the immense things that are required to prepare for a competition helps to teach these young women a great amount of discipline and pride in their personal appearance and the way that they carry themselves.
- Beauty contest platforms are used to spread awareness and address current issues among the youth, such as drug abuse and early pregnancies among young girls.
Negative importance/Disadvantages of beauty contest
- It leads to loss of dignity because it may expose the contestant to indecency.
- Beauty contest may encourage immorality, being anxious to win contestant may end up offering sexual favors for the crown.
- Contestants/children are exploited by getting peanuts from the total collections.
- Losers may be ridiculed by the community.
- Conformity to traditional rules and perspectives of society, there are rules that must be followed for instance certain height, weight and may exclude married women.
- They require long preparation time up to a year for some contestants who are overzealous.
- Demean women by portraying them as ‘sex objects’ and they reduce women to objects to be judged based mainly on physical appearance.
- Causes a lot of anxiety to the participants.
