Study the information carefully and answer the questions which follow:
Santo is a blind man. He is also very poor. Despite his blindness and poverty, he likes transparency from his children. People give him alms of especially sugar, meat, salt, rice and millet flour mostly during festive seasons. Because of his blindness, he likes to be given those items not in kiligrams but in less measurements, which can fit in his palms. All his donors/benefactors, therefore, decided that he shoud always make budgets and share with them so that they offer him money and he makes orders of the items for his sons to bring them to him.

While preparing for 25th December of 2019, the following was his budget.
– 20 halves and 7 quarters of meat at UGX 9,000 per kilogram
– 8 quarters of rice at UGX 1,800 per half kilogram
– Half a sack of sugar, indicating ’80 quarters’ to last him the next 12 months. However, in all shops, a kilogram goes for UGX 3600.
– Quarter a sack of salt of 20kg at UGX 1800 per kilogram.
– 30 kilograms of millet flour which are measured in quarters in store because of little quantities bought for porridge. Each is UGX 800.

(a) How much money is Santo likely to receive from his benefactor for the festive season? (10 marks)
– Meat (20 halves plus 7 quarters) = 11.5kg x 9000 = 105,750
– Rice (8 quarters) = 4 half kg x 1800 = 7,200
– Sugar (80 quarter) = 20 x 3600 = 72,000
– Salt ( ¼ of 20kg) = 5 x 1800 = 9,000
– Millet flour (30kg equivalent to 120 quarters) = 120 x 800 = 96,000
Total = 105,750 + 7,200 + 72,000 + 9,000 + 96,000 = 289,950
Therefore, the total budget is UGX 289,950
(b) If benefactors forget and send Santo a change of UGX 15300, how much in total will he have received? (04marks)
15300 + 289950 = 305, 250
Hence he received UGX 305, 250 from the benefactors.
(c) What are some of the ways in which vulnerable groups of people can be helped to live a good life (06marks)
