Study the following information carfully and answer the questions that follow (50marks)

In 2005, there were 78 normal deliveries in Abaffe Maternity Clinic.

In 2006, 82 women gave birth to babies under the ceasarean section of this hospital

In 2007, 78 babies wer born under the same section, and unfortunately half of them did not make it.

In the same year 5 mothers also failed to make it.

In mid 2008, there were an even number of deliveries both in the ceasarean and normal deliveries section of 42 and 60 babies respectively

However, after the intervation of specialized care later on in the same year the number of normal deliveries increased by half.

In 2009, 12 babies were born normally and 3 under the caesarian section, However, history repeat itself and dejectedly 6mother had a still birth and 9 mothers lest the battle.

(a) Draw a table to represent the above data (12marks)

(b) Calculate the total number of

(i) Babies born in 2006 under the normal deliveries section (02mark)

(ii) Babies bon in five years in caesarian section (02mark)

(iii)Mothers who diedin five years (02marks)

(c) What are the causes of the rampant child infant mortality rate in your community? (12marks)

(d) Suggest practical solutions that can be advanced to mitigate the problem in (c) above (08marks)

The children born under normal delivery section were: (60+30) = 90 (02marks)

(ii) Babiea born in the five year under ceasarian section were

(82 + 39 + 42 + 3) = 166 babies (02marks)

(iii) Mother who died in the five year were:

(5 +9) =14 deaths (02marks)

(c) Explain the causes of the rampant infant mortality rates in your community

  • Birth defects
  • Preterm birth and low birth weight
  • Sudden infant Death syndome (SIDS)
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Accidents such as burns
  • Infections
  • Incomplete immunization
  • Malnutrition
  • Backward tendencies e.g. child sacrifice/human rituals
  • Mother child HIV/AIDS transmission
  • Political and /social instabilities e.g. wars, domestic violence etc .
  • Excessive use of drugs and alcohol leading to birth weight
  • Diarrheal diseases
  • Neonatal encephalopathy, or problems with brain function after birth. Neonatal encephalopathy usually results from birth trauma or a lack of oxygen to the baby during birth.
  • Poverty/inability of mothers to afford health care

(d) Suggeat the practical solution that can be advanced to mitigate the problem in (c) above.

  • Immediate and exclusive breastfeeding
  • Skilled attendants for antenatal, birth, and postnatal care
  • Access to nutrition and micronutrients
  • Family knowledge of danger signs in a child’s health
  • Improved access to water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Immunizations
  • Massive mobilization and sensitization of mothers on issues related to antenatal care
  • Easy Acess to health care facilites
  • Discourage domestic violence
  • Discouarage primitive practices such as child sacrifies.
