• constancy of DNA in the cell: the amount of DNA remain constant for all cells except gametes, which have half the usual amount. These facts are consistent with the expected changes in the quantity of the hereditary material during cell division
• Metabolic stability of DNA: DNA is extremely stable, a characteristic that is essential to any material which passes from generation to generation over millions of years.
• Mutagenic effects and DNA: agents such as X-ray and chemicals which are known to cause inherited mutations are shown to alter the structure of DNA.
