What is the purpose of file extension?

• It identifies the type of file e.g. .docx is a document type of Microsoft word
• Helps the operating system to open/edit the file with the correct software thus preventing errors
• Helps the user to identity a potentially dangerous files such as executable files(.exe) which may contain malware
