Study the information provided in the table below and use it to answer the questions that follow.

(c) Explain the relationship between education and

(d) Use a bar graph to represent the percentage mortality rates for the countries shown in the table

(e)  In your opinion, why are there differences in mortality rates for the countries shown in the table.

Solutions

(a) (i) Mortality rate is the number of deaths per 1000 live birth.

(ii)  Fertility rate is the average number of children a woman has produced in her lifetime.

(b) (i) Country with highest mortality rate is Senegal

(ii)           Country with lowest mortality rate is Kenya

(c)(i)  The higher the percentage of educated females, the lower the fertility rate and the lower the percentage of educated females the higher the fertility rates with the exception of Indonesia

Reasons

  • Educated women may practice family planning
  • Educated women start producing at a later age after school
  • Educate women are more conscious of the quality of life for their children
  • The working educated women may have careers that hinder them from producing.

(c)(ii) The higher the percentage of educated females the higher the vaccination rate

Reasons

  • Educated women live close to the vaccination centers
  • Educated women have high awareness about the benefits of vaccination
  • Educated women may be less prohibited by culture.

(d)  Calculations

(e)  In my opinion the differences in mortality rate between urban and rural areas are due to

  • Better health facilities in urban than rural areas
  • Women in urban areas are more enlightened /seek medical treatment/better hygiene/feed better
  • Cultural inhibition on use of modern medicine in rural areas
  • People in rural area cannot afford treatment
  • Poor transport network in rural areas hinders people in rural areas to reach health facilities
